Brewing news Colombia: SABMiller's Bavaria to build US$175 million brewery

SABMiller PLC said August 24 that its Colombian subsidiary, Bavaria, plans to invest US$175 million in a new brewery in western Colombia, Dow Jones Newswires released August 24.

The construction of the brewery on the outskirts of Cali is due to be completed in late 2007. The company said it was building the brewery in order to "keep pace with growing demand in the region."

It will have an initial capacity of 3.5 million hl, increasing to 4.5 million hl by 2009. It will replace an existing 1.3 million hl facility in the center of Cali.

"This move will allow us finally to catch up with the growing demand in this part of the country," said Karl Lippert, Bavaria's president, in a statement.

"A new brewery such as this is also a great opportunity to take steps forward in production techniques, quality, ergonomics and environmental care, to the benefit of our consumers and our other stakeholders."
